Words from our Founder

Park Hyun Jong
Co-Founder
HJ Education was founded on a deeply personal experience. As a Korean growing up in Malaysia, I faced the challenge of finding reliable IGCSE tuition. Often, private tutors lacked transparency in their qualifications and methods, leaving students and parents uncertain about the quality of education. I wanted to create a place where parents could feel confident and safe, where experienced, results-driven educators could genuinely support international students in need. Since our founding in 2016, HJ Education has grown from a small private tutoring centre to a thriving learning centre with over 300 students from various countries and 20 passionate teaching staff from diverse backgrounds. With over 17 years of experience in education, we have become a trusted solution hub for expatriate families, not only in academics but in navigating broader challenges of living abroad. Our approach is unique. International syllabi can be intimidating, especially in subjects like languages and humanities, which may feel abstract, or maths and science, which can progress too slowly for motivated learners. At HJ, we believe every student learns differently. That’s why we teach each concept in multiple ways to discover the method that resonates best with the individual learner, a philosophy we call the “Prism Approach Project”, which is like a prism refracting light into different angles. This symbolises teaching a concept in multiple ways to illuminate understanding. Unlike many traditional education providers, our mission isn’t centred on academic achievement alone. My goal has always been to nurture curiosity, maintain a student’s love for learning, and inspire the self-driven pursuit of knowledge. We believe that when students are genuinely engaged, academic excellence becomes a natural outcome. Today, HJ Education stands as a leading expatriate education and solutions centre in Kuala Lumpur. I am deeply grateful to the families who have placed their trust in us over the years. Your belief in our vision continues to drive us forward.

Head of Math
As an educator, I believe that Mathematics is not just a subject; it is a puzzle, a way of thinking, and a skill that empowers students to approach challenges with confidence. My journey with Mathematics began in high school, where I discovered the joy of understanding concepts and sharing that knowledge with my peers. It was this realisation that learning is most meaningful when it is shared. This insight ultimately led me to teaching. I view education as a lifelong journey, one that should inspire curiosity rather than fear. Learning should be a process of exploration, where students feel encouraged to embrace mistakes as stepping stones toward mastery. Too often, Mathematics is perceived as intimidating, but I strive to change that perception by fostering an environment where problem-solving is approachable, logical, and even enjoyable. After earning my Master’s Degree, I sought a place where I could teach in a way that aligns with my vision; one that prioritises understanding over memorisation, and confidence over anxiety. At HJ Education, I found the opportunity to help students see Mathematics for what it truly is: a discipline that rewards persistence and creativity. In my classroom, I lead by example. I openly admit mistakes, model resilience, and continuously seek new ways to improve my teaching methods. This approach not only creates a relaxed learning environment but also empowers students to take ownership of their learning, knowing that growth comes through practice and perseverance. As the Head of the Mathematics Department, my goal extends beyond my own classroom. I am committed to building a team of educators who can adapt to the unique needs of each student, ensuring that Mathematics is taught in a way that supports individual learning styles. Together, we strive to make Mathematics an accessible, engaging, and rewarding subject—one that students approach with confidence rather than apprehension.

Head of English
I am an English Teacher at HJ Education. My teaching career began in 2018, when I was completing my degree in Psychology. Since then, I have used the knowledge I learnt and transitioned it to teaching English in HJ Education. This has helped significantly in handling people with different backgrounds, ensuring they always feel comfortable and develop a motivation to learn during class. I believe that everyone has something to share and learn from each other, and that’s what makes meeting and teaching people from various countries so fascinating to me. My goals for learning are to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the English language, encompassing speaking, reading, and writing, thereby helping them gain confidence in their ability to use the language in any setting and situation. I have experience teaching a variety of students, ranging from primary level to high school, as well as adults from international countries looking to improve their language proficiency. My ideals stem from my past experiences as a student. I often found that people are able to do their best when they are comfortable with their teacher and are not afraid to share their opinions in class. This, in turn, helps them acknowledge their mistakes and develop a willingness to learn and improve themselves in an environment where they feel comfortable. In my teaching, I help teach my students in a fun and relaxing way to help them understand the key concepts of English and help them develop techniques to improve their ability to speak, understand new words from reading and use them effectively in their writing, and to help have prolonged conversations where they feel confident in their ability to use the techniques learnt together in class. It is important to me that they feel joyful when they enter my class and experience the same sense of joy when they leave. I often engage with my students in conversations that are best suited to their personality or lifestyle; this helps them feel more connected with their teacher and allows them to be open in class. Through my lessons, I hope to instil a sense of community and a place of knowledge to help my students not only tackle English as a language, but also help guide them in everyday life situations. I am proud to be part of this community, which allows me to meet people from all over the world, to inspire them, and to provide a fun learning method that they can adapt in their future experiences.

Head of Science
Hello! I'm Miss Camillia, a Science and Maths tutor at HJ Education. I teach students from Key Stage 1 to Cambridge IGCSE, A-Levels, and the IB programme. I specialise in Biology. As an educator, I enjoy inspiring students to cultivate curiosity and discover the world through science. My mission is to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel confident to ask questions, think critically, and develop a deep understanding of science and maths. My vision is to inspire a new generation of learners who carry curiosity with them throughout life — seeing science not just as a subject, but as a way to understand the world and make meaningful contributions. I always remind my students to carpe diem — seize the day — and never stop learning.
As a child, while Maths and especially Add Maths were subjects many dreaded, I was the oddball who loved them because solving problems felt akin to being a detective. I found it exciting to follow rules and patterns, much like piecing together clues to a mystery. This interest inspired me to share my learning methods with my friends and siblings, helping make Maths more approachable for them. I applied this passion professionally as a private tutor for secondary students and later as a Maths teacher at Kumon, where I saw firsthand how simple analogies and visual aids could break something that initially seemed like an alien language down into digestible pieces of information for a student. Learning, as I believe it, happens only when the learner is genuinely interested, and it is the teacher’s responsibility to spark that interest by adapting personal methods to each learner. As Ignacio Estrada said, “If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” Too often, students are taught to memorise rather than to think critically and uniquely, which dulls their ability to explore things like the world around them and even their own minds. This makes a subject like Maths seem boring because they’re not allowed to explore what it actually means or how it can be used in real life. Recognising that each child learns differently, I emphasise individualised attention and encourage students to think critically and to make mistakes, viewing them as essential steps in the learning process. My goal is simple: to make my students feel confident and excited when they enter my classroom. I want them to feel the lasting effects of meaningful learning rather than the transient ones of rote memorisation. Ultimately, I want my students to realise how enjoyable and engaging Maths and Add Maths can be by allowing them to explore and dissect these subjects as they would a mystery!
